While shooting videos for our clients in Melbourne, we get to experience a lot of amazing places and events in this vibrant city. Whether it’s great music & arts festivals, creative exhibitions, spectacular shows or action-packed sports events, the events calendar of Melbourne is always fully loaded. To share our passion for this incredible city, we put together some of our favorite events for you.
For video and animation enthusiasts like us, this list wouldn’t be complete without the Australian Centre for the Moving Image – short ACMI. It is one of the major attractions in Melbourne and is the place to go to immerse yourself in the world of video, film and digital culture. With a changing program of permanent and special exhibitions, film screenings and other events running pretty much every day, ACMI really has something on for everyone.
ACMI is the stage for Melbourne’s top film festivals, shows some of the best Australian and international film productions and hosts regular screenings for all ages. Enter the largest screen gallery in the world and take in inspiring exhibitions, watch great films in state-of-the-art cinemas, experience the latest in virtual reality or join in live panels and talks with some of the big creators in tv and film.
Make sure to visit Screen Worlds, ACMI’s free permanent exhibition as it takes you through the ever-changing history of the moving image. It’s an interactive exhibition that spotlights some original props and memorabilia from world-famous productions, including the Oscar Award from Cate Blanchett, the clock from Play School or film outfits worn by Heath Ledger or Kyle Minogue.
Or, if you want to relax, there is a nice café and bar on site overlooking buzzing Federation Square. For more info and the full program, visit the ACMI website (below).
If you’re looking for some family fun for free, come out to ACMI for their family Sundays, happening every first Sunday of the month. This day is filled with creative and interactive experiences that kids of all ages (and their parents) will love. Each month, ACMI comes up with a unique theme to engage your kids in a range of fun activities. Let them paint a virtual reality masterpiece with the latest 3D tools by Google, craft their own YouTube video, or join in a round of “frozen karaoke”. It’s a unique chance to stimulate children’s imagination, spark their creativity and venture into the exciting spheres of visual arts and moving pictures.
