What is a 3DA?

So you’re walking through the city and there’s a dragon on a billboard. That’s cool. You loved Game of Thrones as much as everyone else. But then the dragon flies out of the screen and breathes fire into the air. This might get your attention.

But what exactly is a 3D anamorphic billboard?

3DA is a visual illusion that uses perspective, lighting and depth to make flat surfaces appear 3D, from a certain angle. There are no real holograms. Just 3D animation, a virtual ‘frame’ for objects to leap out of, and screens placed just so. The 3D objects are intentionally distorted to create depth from a particular vantage point. 

Done right, you get gasps, double-takes and phones raised to record.

Where will I see a 3DA?

Piccadilly Circus, Times Square, Shinjuku, Gangnam and, of course, Bourke Street in Melbourne, 3DAs are making waves. They work well on building corners and high-traffic pedestrian zones, so long as you have a high-resolution LED display to work with. But 3DAs also draw crowds online. Footage of 3DAs makes for great, not to mention viral, social media posts. Chances are, you’ve seen 3DAs on TikTok or Instagram.

And they’re not limited to the world’s biggest screens. Smaller formats, when done well, still turn heads and hold attention. It’s about finding the right idea for the right location.

Why 3DAs are great

We are, each of us, bombarded with content on a second-to-second basis. Try walking through a bustling thoroughfare and just count the number of inputs trying to get your attention.
